• Conecta 2019, the international documentary industry meeting event organized by the Chilean Documentary Corporation CCDoc, will gather film industry professionals from 17 countries and filmmakers from all over America, in Santiago.
• Lemebel, this year’s hit documentary, awarded at Berlinale and other international film festivals, will be screened for free on Wednesday, December 11 at 9 p.m.
• Political contingency, audience segmentation, new audiences and the sustainability integrated into the work of production are some of the topics that the expert panels will address this year. All with free entrance at the Santiago Library.
• Connect4Climate will grant the special Film4Climate Postproduction Special Award in association with Laser Film, to one of the participant projects of the Conecta Work in Progress (WIP) section.
Conecta 2019, the most important international documentary industry meeting event in the country, organized by the Chilean Documentary Corporation CCDoc, will celebrate its fourth edition from next Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 this December. This year it will carry out its activities in the Santiago Library and in Matucana 100; the public exhibition of a Chilean documentary will take place in Yungay Main Square, the center of one of the oldest neighborhoods in the capital; and one of the participating projects will receive an award from Connect4Climate, an organization dedicated to sustainability.
During four days the documentary market of Chile and the world congregate around the creation and exchange of ideas, between expert guests who are on the frontline on an international level in matters of production, marketing, distribution and filmmaking of non-fiction audiovisual productions, as well as Chilean filmmakers and from other countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.
Flor Rubina, executive director of CCDoc, says that “making this particular version of Conecta has been a tremendous challenge, both moodwise and production, but we took it with the conviction that today it is absolutely necessary to talk and debate on the issues that are relevant to the audiovisual industry and particularly for this sector, since the documentary is a tremendously valuable genre to raise awareness about what happens not only in Chile but throughout the world. ”
“The experts visiting us from abroad have been very interested in knowing about new projects” adds Rubina, “and although they will encounter a scenario of social effervescence and some inconveniences resulting from the protests, we believe it will also be a fertile scenario for creation and intellectual stimulation. »
Lemebel is also out on the streets
This year the Chilean film that will be exhibited to the audience is Lemebel, a film directed by Joanna Reposi and produced by Paula Saenz-Laguna and Paz Urrutia, which became this year’s most watched documentary, surpassing 20,000 viewers nationwide. Internationally awarded in Berlin, Lima and Stockholm, in addition to winning at Sanfic this year as Best Chilean Film, it can be appreciated outdoors on Wednesday December 11, at 9 p.m., in Yungay Main Square for free.
Writer, visual artist and pioneer of the queer movement in Latin America, Pedro Lemebel shook the conservative society of Chile during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in the late 80s. The body, blood and fire were the protagonists of a work that in his last eight years of his life wanted to be perpetuated in a film he failed to see. For a more sustainable film industry
Connect4Climate (C4C), a World Bank Group program with more than 500 partners, dedicated to climate change communications, participates in Conecta 2019 by giving out the Film4Climate Postproduction Award in association with Laser Film, to one of the Work in Progress (WIP) participating projects. C4C acknowledges that Chile has been particularly committed to the issues of sustainable film production and the promotion of the integration of concepts of sustainability and climate action in film content, and .welcomes the chance to help amplify the debate.
Film4Climate, an important C4C campaign dedicated to promoting sustainability within film production and film content, will reward one of the projects by arranging for it to use the facilities and skills of Laser Film (Italy) for postproduction purposes.
Giulia Braga, Program Manager of Connect4Climate, says that «the award is a way to help build a larger community to establish the concepts of climate action in the film production industry. It is important to support the diverse opinions through strong documentaries that can increase the debate and perhaps offer solutions or guidelines, especially in the future, for our world, as to the best way to establish sustainable lifestyles and a healthy planet for future generations» adds Braga.
Citizen dialogues about cinema
How does the Chilean audiovisual industry is set to face the current political contingency; how does a film is positioned versus the growing audience segmentation; the television versus the content consumption on new platforms and the self-care of a film crew in contexts of war or social conflicts, are some of the topics that will be addressed by expert panelists, all of them coming from markets and documentary festivals as important as IDFA, Sheffield Doc / Fest and Hot Docs. These activities with free admission will take place in the auditorium of the Santiago Library (Matucana 151, Quinta Normal metro station).
