Eight Latin American Projects to Be Presented at Pitch The Whickers in Santiago, Chile

Aimed at Latin American projects in development by filmmakers working on their first feature-length documentary, Pitch The Whickers returns to Conecta for the fourth consecutive year and will award £3,000 to the winning project.

The pitch is an open event that will take place in December 2025 in Santiago, Chile. We congratulate the eight selected projects:

🎥Ako
Countries: Mexico, Brazil
Dir: Juan Pablo Monsalvo / Michelle Corona Pierce
Prod: Max Lavalle Müggenburg
Ako Kamanawa, from the Noke Koi Amazonian tribe, leaves the jungle hoping to share his sacred medicine. But instead, he is used to transport Ayahuasca and spends a year imprisoned in Mexico. On conditional release, he faces a system that criminalizes his culture and finds a family while searching for his place between two worlds.

🎥Exotic
Countries: Uruguay, Chile
Dir: Mariana Castiñeiras
Prod: Nicolás Sequeira / María José Díaz Merino
An exotic deer species multiplies uncontrollably across Uruguay. A park ranger devises a plan to stop them without killing, while a Brazilian businesswoman who feels a spiritual connection with the animals vows to protect them, and a farming couple begin hunting to preserve their livelihood. Who decides who lives and who dies?

🎥Undetectable
Country: Brazil
Dir: Marina Vergueiro
Prod: Felipe Tomazelli / Ricardo Martensen
Based on a dialogue between Marina and her 9-year-old self, the film intertwines childhood memories with the present, 15 years after her HIV diagnosis. Using VHS archives, it traces the epidemic’s timeline and shows that stigma persists. Together with six cis and trans women, they turn pain into art and find in feminist sisterhood a path to healing.

🎥The Opposite Direction
Country: Argentina
Dir: Julia Castro
Prod: Fernando Dominguez
The snow-covered, overgrown ruins of Dr. Ronald Richter mark the beginning of the search for a clean, inexhaustible energy source. This is a forgotten story about the future.

🎥The Island in Silence
Country: Mexico
Dir: Mario Trujillo
Prod: Carlos G García
Abraham, Karla, and José, three young journalists, evoke the hope that came to Cuba in 2015 with widespread internet access: a spark that amplified their voices but also revealed the shadows that drove them to leave their country. Between memory and exile, their journey reveals the human cost of finding a voice on an island of silence, and the resilience of those who, even from afar, continue to tell the stories born in a park with a fragile Wi-Fi signal.

🎥Miami Betrayer
Countries: Argentina, United States
Dir: Sol Purriños
Prod: Mariano Pozzi
Miami Betrayer follows Tatiana, a dancer at Miami’s most iconic strip club. Through the lens of her best friend, the documentary explores empowerment, vulnerability, and the relationship between reality and performance. The story reflects on long-distance friendship, social taboos, and personal contradictions.

🎥The Last Guató
Country: Brazil
Dir: Thamys Trindade
Prod: Sofia Vontobel
The Last Guató is a poetic documentary set in Brazil’s Pantanal, where a river both separates and connects Seu Vicente, the last fluent speaker of his language, and Francisca, a young teacher. Together, they fight to revive their voice before it disappears.

🎥Película Sin Fin, 1995
Country: Chile
Dir: Elisa Leiva Anderson
Prod: Elisa Leiva Anderson
After the death of my grandmother, the human rights lawyer Fabiola Letelier, I found a box of Hi-8 tapes in her closet. The footage from an unfinished film about her life, made in 1995, uncovers how history is both recorded and invented, existing between the archive and the imagination.

In the coming weeks, we will announce the projects selected for Conectados, Conecta con la Distribución, Taller Conecta con las Series, and Conecta con tus Raíces.
