Synopsis

Smell of Diesel portrays the collective traumas caused by the militarization of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro occupied by the Armed Forces. Through voices from within the communities, the film documents the struggle for justice and reparation by victims of human rights violations, which continue to be perpetrated by the Brazilian Army.

    Gizele Martins is a journalist, community communicator, and human rights advocate, born in the Maré favela in Rio. Winner of the Vladimir Herzog Investigative Journalism Award (2024), she is the author of the book Militarization and Censorship. Smell of Diesel is her first film.

    Director

    Natasha Neri is a journalist, documentarist and researcher in Criminal Justice. She is the director of “Police Killing” (2018), winner of It’s All True Film Festival and nominee for IDFA’s Human Rights Award. She has directed over 20 short impact documentaries.
