Synopsis

Filmed over a decade, Queen of the People follows Naomy, an Afro-Colombian teen thrust into pageants by her mother and crowned queen of Cartagena’s biggest grassroots contest. As promises fade and she becomes a mother, different generations face gender roles in a city marked by sex tourism, violence, and the disappearance of women.
